Our short film ‘The Gaze’ is an abstract narrative that aims to depict an alternate reality where a young woman is watched on a theatre stage by a random male. This alternate reality created within the walls of the Athenaeum theatre parallels real life situations where the young woman might feel generally watched or exposed to the gaze of others. The inspiration for our film originally stemmed from a joint passion to depict certain injustices that still exist within binary gender attitudes today and how women particularly are still encouraged to dress up or to fulfil certain gendered expectations. Our overall message is that we can do a lot with our gaze no matter how innocent we intend it to be.
